The Great Barrier Reef Resorts GRI

Question: Discuss about the Great Barrier Reef Resorts GRI. Answer: Introduction In this report a case has been discussed to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) which is basically an organization of international standards that not only helps the businesses, government and other organizations to understand but also helps in communicating the impacts on the issues like the climate change, human rights and the corruption (GRI, 2007). In this report CSR activity is discussed of The One and Only Hayman Island, The Great Barrier Reef Resort, Queensland. CSR is basically the corporate social responsibility that has to be followed by any organization or group of business (Campbell, 2007). By following this activity an organization or business can improve its image in the eyes of the customers and in case of resorts visitors are the king they should feel good about the particular place then only their marketing and sustainability will increase in the market (Clark, 2006). There is a separate annual report that is formed at the end of every year which describe that how well an organization and any kind of business has done justice in following the CSR activity (Adams Zutshi, 2004). There are also many several ways that can be followed to increase the level of CSR activities which are discussed in the report (Boxenbaum, 2006). In this report main focus is on the environment related issues that are occurring because of the resorts or may be by the visitors that are visiting as a tourist. The Great Barrier Reef resort is one of the most favorite tourism destinations and there are so many people that visit this place every year (Golob, Bartlett, 2007). So it is also the duty of the government to maintain this place and makes sure that all the resorts and hotel that are formed on the island follow CSR activity and helps in maintaining the environment neat and clean so that the lives of coral reefs are not damaged. Corporate social responsibility is basically a concept of management where many firms and organizations participate in environmental and social concerns including their stakeholders. Through CSR a firm attains their economic, social and environmental balance. It also involves the ways through which a firm is able to achieve its commercial success and honor the ethical values of the communities and most importantly the environment (Clark, Porter Kramer, 2006). Companies and hotels that have high CSR rating are mostly benefitted (Brands that do good, 2003). This concept not only improves the reputation but also raises morale and improves profits and can also lead to more sustainable growth (chi Gursov, 2009). Some of the researches also analyzed the annual reports and the CSR reports in order to determine the social responsible behavior level of the top ten hotel companies (Holcomb, Upchurch, Okumus, 2007). World tourism organization over the past ten years has taken initiative for the sustainable tourism and the CSR in the hospitality sector. CSR is now becoming an accepted global initiative (Holcomb, Upchurch, Okumus, 2007). Ethical principal of CSR of Planet In the 21st century people are mostly dominated towards the utilization of resources that have less environmental effect on the environment and the society. People now have limited resources and these resources should be handled with care so that there are less chances of degradation of environment. This can only be possible if there is a complete full proof recycling system so that environment and society does not get harmed. Hotel industry is considered as the fastest growing service industry in the globe that provides accommodation, food and hygiene environment to the people around the world (Holcomb, Okumus, 2007). Hotel industry generally adopts the laws regarding the environmental protection from the starting of the construction of their hotel to disposal of raw materials in a way that there is less environment degradation (Kasim, 2006). Moreover there are other factors also that help in minimizing the degradation of environment and that is by decreasing the operation cost and using the latest technology. Adopting the latest technology in hotel industry has become a trend like using biometric, sensors, dustbin fire detection technologies and many more. In case of hotel industry corporate social responsibility is mostly accepted as they have to provide the experience that is memorable for their guests. To maintain their sustainability most of the hotels adopt policies be it preparing food by less use of electricity or gas, or by providing neat and clean environment by less affected chemicals. Not only hotels should provide a good environment to their guests but they should also give a decent environment to their employees also so that morality remains with the hotels. To develop the culture hotels must adopt the corporate social responsibility so that every employee of hotel follow the work culture in order to meet the international standard that aims to have sustainability, cost management and provides equal opportunity to grow. Some of the principles of CSR of environment are as follows: It helps in promoting energy efficiency and also works on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It promotes the principle of 3R that is reduce, reuse and recycle for the waste products. This concept also helps in upholding the initiative that values the water resources. It motivates for the continuous improvement so that environmental burden can be reduced. CSR proactively supports the environmental activities and also contribute to the society. It helps in complying with the environmental laws and regulations and also helps in implementing the proprietary standards. CSR also helps in keeping a sufficient grasp of data that is concerned with the global environmental and also makes an effort for the preservation of the environment. Current CSR two tools for Communication Required Development Queensland This resort made sure that whether anything is dead or alive there would be no collection of it as the dead things can be home to other creatures also which will eventually help the environment in a better way. There will be no littering and dropping of bottles in the island and also no plastic or cigarette butts will be thrown in the island as these items will harm the animals and will also affect the environment. Feeding to fishes, birds and even animals is not allowed as human food is not suitable for the them and later they can even become sick and die too as well. For improving the quality of the activities small group sizes are made as well as greater protection to the environment and wildlife are also provided. By sticking to walking tracks, trails and sandy areas during marine activities can also damage the habitat and even cause disturbance to the wildlife which will directly or indirectly affect the environment. During the time of critical times like breeding and nesting sensitive areas are avoided and also for this explanation are given to the guests who help in affecting the environment in a positive way. The Great Barrier Reef resort also makes sure that no plants and animals are stressed or damaged during any kind of activities happening there and also helps in saving the environment. It is also ensured that there is negligible noise so that there is no disruption to the wildlife and the environment. It also explains their visitors that how they can create an impact on the area and the wildlife and can also promote the minimal impact actions that can be used by them to reduce it. It also promotes the positive role of GBRMPA, the Marine Zoning areas and the eco-tourism certification to make the environment better. It also helps in promoting the awareness of the impact of the personal behavior and also provides ways to reduce it. Ways to Increase the level of CSR Activity There are many ways that can be adopted to increase the corporate social responsibility. Some of the ways are: By providing high level of protections to the marine life can help in increasing the level of CSR. Water quality can be improved just by reducing the amount of pesticides used to wash the reef. Implementation of the awareness and monitoring of the program for the conservation of marine and coral reefs in the resorts can also be done to increase the CSR activity. This will also help in utilizing the core strengths of the tourism industry which also includes the island resorts and divine centers. By providing the training and empowering the local capacity so that monitoring of the coral reefs can be done and managing will also be done which will help the environment in a positive way. Focus is also given on the capacity building in islands resorts and government has also taken initiative in doing this, in this way also CSR activity is increased (Australian government, 2014). National marine research Centre has also generated the information about the tourism planning and coral reef management so that a network is developed to manage the marine areas in the resorts islands and hence CSR activity is increased. By evaluating the vulnerability of the sectors and the local communities that are totally dependent on the coral reefs. By doing this vulnerability to climate change will also be identified both in the terms of impacts and also in the terms of the action at the local and national level that can reduce the vulnerability. By giving the total focus on the resorts and the local communities and by designing the constructive engagement to enhance the positive interaction and also by reducing the potential conflict can raise the level of CSR activity. By providing a suitable training to the staff of the resort about the environmental sustainability and the conservation of marine so that people get more concerned toward the environment and again motive gets achieved to increase the CSR activity ( Park Stuart, 2016). By developing and declaring the resort houses reefs and privately managing the marine areas will also boost the environment in a positive way (Elliot, 2016). By developing a waste management system on the inhabited island will also save the environment and will the raise the level of CSR activity. These are ways which can be applied to increase the level of CSR activities and this will also help the business in gaining the sustainability for a longer period of time. Theory used in this case There are actually many theories that can be used to describe the CSR such as corporate social responsibility, the triple bottom theory and the stakeholder theory (Brusseau, 2017). In this report the triple bottom line theory has been used to describe the case of CSR. In this theory basically CSR dictates about the corporate leaders and even present the bottom line which results not only in the economic terms but also in the environment term also. There are mostly three columns present in this theory and each should be separated from each other. And these are: economic sustainability, social sustainability and most importantly the environmental sustainability. In this report main focus is on the environmental sustainability. Environmental sustainability mainly starts with the declaration that all the natural resources present now be it oil fueling the engines, cleaning the air that people breathe and also the water that people drink are limited. If all the natural resources are deteriorated eventually then the next generation will not be able to enjoy the same quality of life that people now experience. Hence conservation of resources plays a vital role in the development of the new sources. So in the case of The great barrier reef resorts where toxins are poured into the ground and later when they erupt, horrific evidences occur which further results into the death of the lives in the marine (Kroon Joo, 2010).Because of the tourism destination that this place is, environment is damaged and to improve this damage many steps are taken which will improve the environment and also raise the level of CSR activity (Thomas Maxwell, 2008). At some places in the Great Barrier Reef there is carbon burning pollution which affects the lives of coral reefs and hence makes the place unlivable (Roche, 2015). Hence for the sustainability of the business a proper action should be taken so that there is facilitation of the natural worlds renewal. Recycling of the products that are used by the visitors in the resorts and cleaning of the contamination that exist is also done by these resorts to maintain the clean and healthy environment. All the actions that are taken towards the CSR activity should be not because they are legally required but for the sake of the resources and the environment. Stakeholder theory can also be applied in this case as this theory is the mirror image of the corporate social responsibility. In this theory it describes the individuals and the other groups that are affected by the action of the business. In this case if resorts produce and kind of waste that damage the lives of the reefs, CSR perspective attaches a responsibility directly to the owner of the business so that all the waste should be disposed safely (Huntington, 2016). Hence all the stakeholders are an important part of the business and their voices must contribute to the decisions that are made by the business (Yamak Suer, 2005). Stakeholders that participate in business may not own a stock but they have the right to be a part of any decision making process that is happening in the business (Foster Jonker, 2005). Conclusion From this report it has been concluded that it is very important for the organizations and business to have a corporate social responsibility which will help in the environment to become better. Businesses not only should focus on the maximizing the profit but should also have a proper action on the people who are related with it and also on the environment. It has become a necessity for the companies and the business to adopt the corporate social responsibility so that there is an increase in the responsibilities and this will also help eventually in contributing to a better world with a better environment. Implementation of CSR is a complex method and does not generally involve the steps to follow it rather it is a simple process that one can follow in daily activity also. There are theories discussed in this report which explains how the Great Barrier Reef resorts should look toward the CSR. And there are many ways provided that can be adopted to increase the level of CSR activity in their business. All the current CSR activities that the Great Barrier Reef follows are also presented in this report which directly or indirectly affects the environment in a positive way. All the guidelines that given related to the CSR are related to the GRI and an annual report of the Great Barrier Reef resort is also provided in this report. Ethical principles that a business follows are also described in detail in this report which describes about the ways people can adopt so that there is less environment degradation and provides the ethics that one must follow in order to maintain the environment neat and clean. For all this government should take the initiative and should makes sure that all the business and the organizations are adopting the corporate social responsibility in the right manner and should be ethical in all the approaches that they follow. Recommendations Corporate social responsibility of culture can be established which will save the environment and help the resorts to grow in a better way. Development of the corporate ethos can be a good idea which helps in making connections with the communities within which they function and also makes sure that there is a full engagement of the stakeholders so that better business decisions can be made which will ultimately help the resort to grow. The mission and the value system of the corporation can be amended in such a way that it reflects more responsibility socially and can have a sustainable approach by ensuring the value creation of the business. A proper training of corporate social responsibility and the principles about the sustainability can be provided to the employees who are related to the resorts. In this way there will be a proper management of the activities taking place in the resorts. The social norms and values that are changing regarding the hospitality industry can be strategized in such a way that they fulfill the demand of the people yet meet their goals. By doing this there will be a proper management approach which could be adapted for the betterment of the business. By implementing the affordable housing strategies to the management plans of the resort can be of great use. This housing strategy will help to develop the better image of the resort and will also enhance the performance in the long term and will also benefit the market share of the business. Annual sustainability report can be executed which will show the corporate social responsibility of the business. This will help in encouraging the partnership between the stakeholders and the business. This report will also help in finding out that as where improvements are needed and eventually they can be achieved. All the environmental and social impacts should be identified which will help in saving the environment. A proper supply chain linkage can be developed socially which will help the business to work in a proper managed way. Opportunities can be provided to the employees and the customers so that more of the people are attracted towards the resorts which will ultimately help in the marketing of the resort. Alternative ownership options can be created for the business. Recycling of the products that are used by the customers in the resorts can be done this will enhance the corporate social responsibility and will also help the environment to be safe and healthy. Using of biodegradable products can also be of great use. By saving the coral reefs that are present on the beach will also do wonders to this. These were the recommendations that could be applied to the Great Barrier Reef resort in order to improve in its quality and have a better corporate social responsibility. References Adams, C.
